Toyota Tsusho Boosts Bangladesh Mobility Investment
Toyota Tsusho Corporation announced a ¥1.815 billion (1,412 million Bangladeshi Taka) capital injection into Toyota Bangladesh Limited (TBL) to bolster its mobility operations in the country. This investment will elevate TBL’s status to a 'specific subsidiary' of Toyota Tsusho, a designation triggered when a subsidiary’s capital exceeds 10% of the parent company’s capital.
The move reflects Toyota Tsusho’s strategic focus on expanding its presence in the Bangladeshi market. TBL, established in 2025, currently engages in the import, wholesale, retail, and after-sales service of Toyota vehicles and parts. Following the capital increase, TBL’s total capital will reach ¥7.77 billion (6,041 million Bangladeshi Taka). Toyota Tsusho currently holds a 1% stake in TBL, with Toyota Tsusho Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (TTAP) owning the remaining 99%.
Recent financial data for TBL, covering the fiscal year ending March 2026, reveals a net asset value of ¥838 million (651 million Bangladeshi Taka), total assets of ¥1.154 billion (897 million Bangladeshi Taka), and revenue of ¥97 million (75 million Bangladeshi Taka). However, the company reported a net loss of ¥19 million (-14 million Bangladeshi Taka) for the same period. Toyota Tsusho anticipates a negligible impact from this investment on its financial performance for the fiscal year ending March 2027.
The company’s decision to increase its stake in TBL underscores a broader trend of investment in emerging markets, particularly within the automotive sector. While the filing does not detail specific growth projections for TBL, the increased capital allocation suggests an expectation of expanded operations and market share within Bangladesh’s developing economy. The move also builds on Toyota Tsusho’s established presence in the region, leveraging existing relationships and infrastructure through TTAP.
Toyota Tsusho’s investment in TBL represents a calculated step to capitalize on growth opportunities in Bangladesh’s mobility sector. The company’s financial disclosures reveal a continued commitment to strategic investments in key markets, even as some subsidiaries, like TBL, currently operate at a loss. The performance of TBL and the success of its expansion will be key indicators of Toyota Tsusho’s broader strategy in South Asia.
