RWE AG: Suspect Arrested in German Power Grid Sabotage Investigation

German authorities have arrested a suspect linked to sabotage attacks targeting the country’s power grid. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Prosecutor General’s office in Karlsruhe.

The suspect, a 48-year-old man, was initially detained in early September and is accused of attempting to sabotage power lines near coal-fired power plants in North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg, and Saxony. Police identified a confession taking responsibility for the attacks, stating, “Electricity generation from fossil fuels is a crime.”

The Federal Prosecutor General’s office took over the investigation, prompting the suspect’s presentation before the Federal Court of Justice. The attacks aimed to cause widespread power outages and undermine public trust in critical infrastructure protection, potentially impacting Germany’s internal security. The case highlights growing concerns about the security of energy infrastructure and the potential for politically motivated attacks.

The investigation follows prior reports of low gas storage levels in Germany and state-directed procurement efforts to secure energy supplies, signaling broader vulnerabilities in the nation’s energy security.
