Rheinmetall Faces MGCS Downgrade, Analyst Cuts Price Target

Shares of Rheinmetall AG are facing headwinds as the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) tank project appears to be undergoing a significant reassessment, potentially moving away from a full joint-tank development towards a networked system of existing models. This shift, announced by German and French defense ministers Boris Pistorius and Catherine Vautrin, follows similar reductions in scope for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project, raising questions about the future of large-scale defense collaborations between the two nations.

The reassessment stems from comments made by the French Chief of Staff, Fabien Mandon, who indicated Germany’s perceived withdrawal from building a new tank alongside France. Both ministers affirmed the project remains viable, but offered no concrete assurances a shared tank would be the ultimate outcome, instead emphasizing a focus on improved networking, cooperative combat, automation, and robotics. The MGCS project, originally envisioned as a €100 billion successor to the Leopard and Leclerc tanks, has already faced delays and industrial disputes, suggesting pre-existing tensions within the partnership.

Compounding the project uncertainty, Berenberg Bank downgraded Rheinmetall from ‘Buy’ to ‘Hold’ and slashed its price target by 36% from €1600 to €1020. The analyst firm, in a report released October 8th, cited concerns regarding the company’s mid-term growth prospects and a lack of sufficient future orders to maintain momentum beyond 2030. The downgrade suggests investor anxieties are mounting regarding Rheinmetall’s ability to capitalize on increased global defense spending given the evolving dynamics of key projects.

These developments present a dual challenge for Rheinmetall. The potential scaling back of the MGCS project could impact its projected revenue stream, while the analyst downgrade reflects a broader market concern about the sustainability of its growth trajectory. The company now faces increased pressure to secure new contracts and demonstrate its ability to deliver on existing commitments amidst a shifting geopolitical landscape and evolving defense priorities.
