OCBC Posts Record Nine-Month Profit, NPL Ratio Improves
Singapore-based OCBC reported record profits for both the nine-month period and the third quarter, posting S$6.24 billion and S$2.04 billion respectively, signaling continued strength in its core banking operations despite a mixed global economic outlook.
The nine-month profit represents a 10% increase year-over-year, driven by broad-based growth across Wealth Management, Wholesale Banking, and Insurance. Notably, Wealth Management fees surged 25% to a record S$1.33 billion, and non-interest income from Wholesale Banking grew 24%. While third-quarter profit saw a more modest 3% year-over-year increase to S$2.04 billion, Banking Operations profit reached a record high, supported by disciplined cost and risk management.
Asset quality also improved, with the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio decreasing to 0.8% and allowances lowered, reflecting continued prudent risk management. This is particularly noteworthy given ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainties in the global economy, including concerns around China’s economic slowdown and conflicts in the Middle East. The bank’s NPA coverage ratio also stands at a healthy 168%, providing a substantial buffer against potential credit losses.
However, the results were not uniformly positive. Great Eastern Holdings, OCBC’s insurance arm, experienced weaker investment performance in the third quarter due to mark-to-market losses on its bond portfolio amidst rising interest rates. This offset some of the gains in the banking sector. Despite this, OCBC maintained a strong capital position, with a fully phased-in Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) CAR of 14.0%, positioning it well for future growth and potential challenges. Overall, OCBC’s performance demonstrates its ability to navigate a complex environment and deliver robust results, anchored by strength in its core banking franchises and effective risk management.
