Nissan Chemical Establishes China Subsidiary for Semiconductor Materials
Nissan Chemical is establishing a new subsidiary in China to bolster its supply of semiconductor materials, responding to growing demand and the need for supply chain stability. The company will invest 2.1 billion yuan (approximately 5 billion yen) in Nissan Chemical Materials (Zhangjiagang) Co., Ltd., located in Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province.
The subsidiary will focus on the manufacturing and sales of anti-reflective coatings (BARC) and multi-layer materials, key components in semiconductor production. Nissan Chemical stated the move is designed to strengthen its supply base within China and build a responsive system to meet fluctuating demand and enhance customer service. This investment comes amid broader industry efforts to diversify and secure semiconductor supply chains, a critical issue highlighted by recent geopolitical tensions and supply shortages.
The decision to establish the subsidiary was approved by Nissan Chemical’s Board of Directors on April 28, 2026, followed by an investment agreement with Zhangjiagang City. Registration of the new entity was completed on September 1, 2026. Nissan Chemical plans to remit the first tranche of capital, 0.89 billion yuan (approximately 2.1 billion yen), by October 15, 2026. The company anticipates minimal impact on its fiscal year ending March 2027, but will disclose any material changes as needed.
The move reflects a strategic bet on continued growth in the Chinese semiconductor market. While companies are increasingly reevaluating China-focused strategies due to geopolitical risks, Nissan Chemical’s investment suggests a sustained belief in the region’s demand. However, the success of this venture will depend on navigating the complexities of the Chinese market and establishing a competitive position within a rapidly evolving landscape. The company's ability to quickly scale production and secure key customer relationships will be crucial in realizing the expected benefits of this investment.
