Lasertec Q1 Sales Decline 25.5% Amidst Semiconductor Cycle

Lasertec Corporation reported a 25.5% year-over-year decrease in consolidated sales for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, totaling ¥40.369 billion. The decline reflects ongoing adjustments within the semiconductor industry, despite a generally favorable environment driven by robust demand for advanced semiconductors used in AI applications.

Operating profit for the quarter reached ¥15.769 billion, a 41.0% decrease compared to the same period last year. Similarly, net income attributable to shareholders fell 43.7% to ¥10.734 billion. While sales and profits decreased, the company upheld its previously announced full-year earnings projections, indicating confidence in future performance. Segment-wise, sales of semiconductor-related equipment decreased by 42.9% to ¥23.849 billion, while other products saw a substantial increase of 134.7% to ¥580 million, and service revenue rose by 31.2% to ¥16.011 billion.

The company noted that the global economic environment remains uncertain due to geopolitical risks, rising energy prices, and inflationary pressures. However, Lasertec’s primary customers in the semiconductor industry are continuing to invest in capacity expansion, particularly for advanced chips used in artificial intelligence. The firm also cited a strong order backlog exceeding prior expectations. As of September 30, 2026, total assets increased to ¥366.413 billion, and the equity ratio stood at 65.4%.

Cash flow from operating activities improved significantly, increasing by 558.6% to ¥39.102 billion, driven by an increase in received prepayments and profits. Despite this, cash flow from investing activities was negative due to investments in property, plant, and equipment, and financing activities saw an outflow due to dividend payments. The company’s financial position remains sound, with cash and cash equivalents reaching ¥110.768 billion at the end of the quarter.

Lasertec’s Q1 results demonstrate the cyclical nature of the semiconductor equipment market, with a current slowdown following a period of strong growth. While sales and profits have declined, the company’s maintained full-year outlook and strong order backlog suggest a potential recovery as demand for advanced semiconductors continues to rise, particularly within the AI sector.
