Kyocera Reports Record First-Half Profit Amidst Semiconductor Demand

Kyocera reported record first-half profits, posting a 32.2% year-over-year increase in profit attributable to owners of the parent company to ¥73.43 billion ($482 million) as of September 30. The gains were fueled by robust demand for high-value-added semiconductor packages and capacitors, particularly those serving the rapidly expanding AI data center market.

Revenue increased 8.8% to ¥1.078 trillion ($7.09 billion) over the same period. However, the reported profit increase was partially offset by approximately ¥37.1 billion ($244 million) in one-time losses, including a ¥29.5 billion impairment loss related to a gallium nitride (GaN) device business and a ¥7.6 billion provision for energy-related products. Despite these charges, the company’s core components and electronic components segments both saw substantial increases in profitability and revenue.

The company has revised its full-year sales forecast upwards to ¥2.12 trillion, citing continued strong demand in the AI and semiconductor markets. However, Kyocera has maintained its previous profit forecast, anticipating that the gains from increased sales will be offset by the impact of the previously reported temporary losses and a ¥15 billion profit from the sale of its chemical business.

Kyocera's results highlight the current strength in the semiconductor market, where demand for specialized components is being driven by the growth of artificial intelligence and data centers. While the company faces headwinds from restructuring charges and potential economic uncertainties, the strong performance of its core businesses positions it to capitalize on continued growth in these key sectors. The company’s decision to maintain its profit outlook suggests a conservative approach, acknowledging potential risks while benefiting from current market momentum.
