Japan Tobacco Reports 24.2% Jump in Operating Profit for Q3
Japan Tobacco (JT) reported a 24.2% year-on-year increase in operating profit for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, reaching ¥618.9 billion. This growth was fueled by positive contributions from both its tobacco and processed food businesses. The company also revised its full-year guidance upwards, anticipating improved profitability.
Revenue for the period increased by 21.0% to ¥2,991.382 billion. The strong performance was partially attributed to favorable exchange rate effects and successful pricing strategies, particularly in markets like the Philippines, Russia, and Turkey. The company highlighted continued momentum in its heated product (HP) portfolio, with Ploom demonstrating consistent growth in both sales volume and market share, especially in Japan with the Ploom AURA model.
Beyond the headline figures, JT is actively managing its portfolio, including the recent acquisition of Scandinavian Tobacco Group’s pipe tobacco brands. The company’s adjusted operating profit, excluding acquisition-related intangible asset amortization and other adjustments, also increased. However, the report noted increased costs related to a smoking-related lawsuit settlement in Canada, impacting both operating and net profits.
Looking ahead, JT raised its full-year outlook, forecasting an increase in adjusted operating profit and net profit. The company anticipates a positive impact from exchange rates and sustained strong performance in its tobacco business. The revised forecast sees a 3.233 billion yen increase in overall profit.
The company’s results reflect a broader trend of robust earnings in the consumer staples sector, despite ongoing geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties. The performance underscores JT’s ability to navigate a changing regulatory landscape and adapt to evolving consumer preferences, particularly in the realm of reduced-risk products. The company’s revised guidance suggests confidence in its ability to maintain this momentum through the remainder of the fiscal year.
