Infineon Invests €1.1 Billion in GaN Semiconductor Production

Infineon Technologies is investing €1.1 billion through 2034 in its Villach, Austria facility to create the world’s first high-volume production line for Gallium Nitride (GaN) power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers, the company announced Tuesday.

This substantial investment aims to capitalize on the rapidly increasing demand for high-performance power solutions across multiple industries. According to Infineon, GaN technology enables significant efficiency gains in areas such as artificial intelligence data centers, energy infrastructure, electric mobility, robotics, and consumer electronics. The project has secured €319 million in funding through the European Chips Act, underscoring the strategic importance of bolstering semiconductor manufacturing within Europe.

Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck stated that the company will be the first globally to bring Gallium Nitride-based power electronics into volume production with the new 300-millimeter facility. Analysts project the GaN power semiconductor market to reach approximately €3.5 billion by 2031, representing a sixfold increase from its estimated value in 2025, with an annual growth rate of around 35%. The transition to larger 300-millimeter wafers will allow for the production of 2.3 times more chips compared to 200-millimeter wafers, significantly boosting production efficiency.

The investment will utilize existing cleanroom space at the Villach site, ensuring a cost-effective expansion of capacity. While no new jobs are expected to be created directly, the investment is expected to secure existing positions at Infineon Austria, which employs approximately 5,800 people, with around 4,800 based in Villach. This investment follows a recent €5 billion investment in a new manufacturing facility in Dresden, marking the company’s largest single investment to date.

The market for GaN remains a niche segment, but is expanding rapidly. Infineon’s commitment to GaN production builds on prior investments in silicon carbide and gallium nitride machinery, as noted in their 2023 financial report, and the ongoing construction of the Smart Power Fab in Dresden, first announced in 2024. The move reflects a broader industry trend of diversifying into new business areas and prioritizing high-growth segments, as evidenced by ongoing strategic initiatives across the sector.
