ICBC Reports 6.03% Profit Increase in Q3 2026
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) saw its net profit rise by 6.03% year-on-year to RMB288.278 billion for the first nine months of 2026, according to a filing released on October 30th. This growth comes amid a challenging economic environment in China, characterized by a weakening domestic economy and recent volatility in stock markets.
Operating income for the same period increased by 9.19% to RMB667.137 billion, driven by a 9.64% increase in net interest income, which reached RMB519.054 billion. The bank’s net interest margin stood at 1.29%, a slight increase of one basis point compared to the same period last year. Non-interest income also grew, rising 7.66% to RMB148.083 billion, with net fee and commission income increasing by 1.55% to RMB92.280 billion. ICBC set aside RMB152.071 billion for impairment losses on assets, a 19.65% increase, with loan impairment losses accounting for the bulk of this at RMB150.922 billion, up 9.78%.
As of September 30th, 2026, ICBC’s total assets amounted to RMB57.823 trillion, an 8.13% increase year-on-year. Total loans and advances to customers reached RMB32.234 trillion, a 5.66% increase. The bank’s non-performing loan ratio edged down to 1.29%, from 1.31% in the prior period, while the allowance to NPLs stood at 211.64%, a slight decrease from the previous year. Capital ratios remained strong, with the common equity tier 1 capital adequacy ratio at 13.07%, the tier 1 capital adequacy ratio at 14.27%, and the overall capital adequacy ratio at 18.50%, all exceeding regulatory requirements.
ICBC continued to strengthen its capital base through bond issuance, publicly issuing RMB180 billion in tier 2 capital bonds and RMB40 billion in undated additional tier 1 capital bonds during July-October 2026. The bank also fully redeemed $6.16 billion in undated Additional Tier 1 Capital Bonds in September 2026. The bank also made progress on an investment in China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund Phase III Co., Ltd., having paid RMB8.6 billion of a planned RMB21.5 billion investment.
ICBC’s results reflect its position as a leading Chinese bank navigating a complex economic landscape. The modest decline in the NPL ratio, coupled with robust capital adequacy ratios, suggests a stable asset quality profile. However, the increased provision for impairment losses indicates a cautious approach to credit risk amidst the broader economic slowdown.
