Goldman Sachs Q3 Earnings Surge 23% Amid Strong Trading, Investment Banking

Goldman Sachs delivered a strong third quarter, reporting net earnings of $5.29 billion – a 23% increase compared to $4.10 billion in the same period last year. This substantial rise was primarily fueled by significant gains in its Global Banking & Markets division, demonstrating the firm’s ability to capitalize on resilient economic activity and favorable market conditions despite ongoing geopolitical concerns.

The surge in net revenues, reaching $18.68 billion, was largely attributable to a 46% jump in market making revenues and a 22% increase in investment banking revenues. Specifically, advisory fees rose due to increased M&A activity, and equity underwriting benefitted from a strong IPO market. Investment management revenues also saw a boost, climbing 39% due to higher assets under supervision and incentive fees from fund distributions. These gains offset a significant decline in Platform Solutions, impacted by markdowns on the Apple Card loan portfolio, which was transferred to held for sale in late 2025.

The bank’s financial strength is further underscored by its capital position. As of September 2026, the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio stood at 12.4% under the Standardized Capital Rules and 13.6% under the Advanced Capital Rules. This robust capital base, coupled with an annualized return on equity of 18.7%, suggests the firm is well-positioned to navigate potential economic headwinds. While operating expenses increased by 20% to $11.31 billion—primarily due to higher transaction-based and compensation expenses—the efficiency ratio improved to 60.5%, indicating improved cost management.

Looking ahead, the operating environment remains uncertain, marked by geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures, and shifting interest rate policies. However, Goldman Sachs’ strong Q3 performance, driven by gains in key business segments and a solid capital position, suggests the firm is currently well-equipped to navigate these challenges. The firm’s net revenues increased by 25% during the first nine months of 2026, reaching $56.24 billion, demonstrating sustained momentum throughout the year.
