Elmos Semiconductor Lands Design Wins for OLED Lighting

Elmos Semiconductor has secured design wins with a German premium automotive OEM for its pixel-based OLED rear lights, a development enabled by the company’s new 48-channel LED controller, the E522.96. This marks a significant step for Elmos into the increasingly sophisticated automotive exterior lighting market.

The E522.96 controller allows for the implementation of OLED applications featuring hundreds of individually controllable pixels. This allows for complex lighting functions to be achieved with fewer components, and opens the door to more intricate and dynamic lighting designs. The controller is available in both CAN-FD and UART versions, offering flexibility for different vehicle architectures. Elmos intends to focus more on the exterior lighting sector, as vehicle exterior lighting increasingly becomes a key design element.

The company highlights the growing importance of high-resolution lighting solutions around the vehicle, and is expanding its product portfolio to include Smart Edge Gateway ICs for Ethernet-based communication between LED controllers. The 16-channel E522.95 controller complements the lineup for brake and turn signal functions. Dr. Jan Dienstuhl, Chief Sales Officer, emphasized that the design wins confirm the company’s innovative technology and provide access to advanced OLED lighting applications.

Elmos plans to showcase an OLED demonstrator using the E522.96 at electronica 2026 in Munich, illustrating the potential of hundreds of individually controlled pixels to create dynamic lighting experiences. The company will also be presenting new technologies in the Smart Edge Gateway segment.

Elmos’ success in securing these design wins positions it to capitalize on the trend towards more sophisticated and customizable vehicle lighting, a sector increasingly focused on both aesthetics and safety. The increased emphasis on exterior lighting as a design element, coupled with the demand for dynamic lighting functions, suggests further growth opportunities for Elmos within the automotive supply chain.
