Continental AG Raises Profit Outlook on Strong Q3

Continental AG significantly raised its full-year profitability forecast after reporting a 14.9% adjusted EBIT margin in the third quarter, up one percentage point year-over-year. This upward revision—to a projected margin of 13.4% to 14.0%, from a previous 12.0% to 13.5%—drove a nearly 6% surge in the company’s stock price to €70.94. The improved outlook reflects strong performance in the tire business, particularly from larger, more expensive tires driven by demand from electric vehicles, despite headwinds from rising raw material costs.

The company’s Q3 operational profit increased by nearly 7% to €514 million, exceeding analyst expectations. While nominal revenue fell by approximately 11% to €3.45 billion, the decline was minimal—0.1%—when adjusted for changes in the consolidation area. This discrepancy highlights the impact of strategic portfolio adjustments, including the ongoing divestment of its automotive supplier business and Contitech, its plastics technology division, both of which are expected to be completed around year-end.

Despite the positive earnings momentum, Continental anticipates increased pressure from raw material prices, particularly crude oil, in the fourth quarter, estimating a mid-double-digit million euro impact. The company expects total raw material-related burdens for 2026 to reach a low-to-mid three-digit million euro figure. Management is mitigating these costs through negotiations with suppliers, optimizing the raw material mix, and passing costs onto the market, measures that demonstrably contributed to the strong Q3 results.

The return to profitability was further underscored by a Q3 net profit of €349 million, a substantial recovery from the €756 million loss recorded in the same period last year, which was impacted by restructuring and divestment-related effects. Continental also narrowed its full-year revenue target to €13.5 to €13.9 billion. The earnings revision and stock price increase suggest investors are responding favorably to the company’s strategic repositioning and its ability to navigate rising input costs, while the Q3 results indicate a return to sustainable profitability.
