Continental AG Raises Outlook on Strong Tire Performance
Continental AG significantly raised its full-year profit outlook after a strong third quarter, driven by robust performance in its tire business. The company now anticipates an adjusted EBIT margin of around 13.4 to 14.0 percent, up from a previous forecast of 12.0 to 13.5 percent.
The positive revision stems from a 6.7 percent increase in adjusted EBIT to €514 million, with the adjusted EBIT margin climbing to 14.9 percent. This improvement exceeded analyst expectations, which had predicted performance in line with the prior-year period. The strong results were particularly evident in Europe and Asia, where the tire business saw continued growth. While weak automotive markets dampened original-equipment business, increased sales of ultra-high-performance tires (UHP tires) and positive exchange-rate effects offset these challenges.
Despite the overall positive trend, Continental acknowledged rising raw material costs, which are expected to further impact earnings in the fourth quarter. Revenue for the quarter totaled €3.5 billion, a decrease of 11.4 percent, largely attributable to the sale of its Original Equipment Solutions business. However, organic sales declined by only 1.5 percent after accounting for the divestiture. Net income reached €349 million, a substantial improvement compared to the €756 million loss reported in the same quarter last year, which was impacted by one-time effects related to business restructurings.
The company also narrowed its full-year sales guidance to a range of approximately €13.5 billion to €13.9 billion, reflecting continued confidence in its performance. Continental’s strategic focus on expanding its portfolio of UHP tires, particularly those 18 inches and above, is proving successful, with these tires now accounting for 62 percent of its global Pkw-tire revenue—up from 49 percent in 2020. This positions Continental to benefit from the growing demand for tires suitable for larger, heavier, and increasingly electrified vehicles. The raised outlook and strong tire performance signal a positive trajectory for the company as it navigates a challenging global automotive landscape.
