Commerzbank Posts Record Nine-Month Profit, Maintains Outlook

Commerzbank delivered a record nine-month net profit of €2.7 billion, a 41% increase year-over-year, signaling sustained momentum even as a takeover by Unicredit looms. The results, announced November 5th, demonstrate the bank’s continued strong performance and bolster its position ahead of a potential acquisition by the Italian banking group.

The surge in profitability was fueled by an 8% increase in total revenues to €9.7 billion, with net commission income rising 8.3% to €3.25 billion. The operating result also saw significant gains, increasing 17% to €4 billion. This performance allowed Commerzbank to reaffirm its full-year net profit target of at least €3.4 billion, a figure initially announced in August, despite acknowledging increased competition for deposits impacting net interest income expectations. A stable CET1 ratio of 14.2% further reinforces the bank’s financial health.

The positive results come amid ongoing scrutiny surrounding Unicredit’s planned acquisition, with regulatory approvals still pending. While the acquisition introduces uncertainty, Commerzbank’s strong financial position provides a solid foundation for future integration. The bank is also progressing with a share buyback program, having repurchased roughly 70% of the allocated €1.2 billion, contributing to a planned total capital return of around €3.2 billion for the year.

Commerzbank's net return on tangible equity (RoTE) increased to 12.4% after nine months, a substantial improvement compared to 8.2% in the same period last year. The bank's cost-income ratio, excluding compulsory contributions, also improved to 50.5%, demonstrating enhanced efficiency. These figures collectively underscore a period of robust financial health, positioning Commerzbank favorably amidst a complex European banking landscape.
