CITIC Bank Q3 Profit Rises 3.56% Amidst Economic Headwinds

CITIC Bank Corporation Limited reported a net profit attributable to shareholders of RMB 55.293 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, a 3.56% increase year-on-year. The results, released in an unaudited statement, show a moderate expansion in profitability despite what the bank characterizes as a “complex and severe external environment.”

Operating income for the period reached RMB 163.601 billion, up 4.16% from the same period last year. This growth was largely propelled by a 9.70% increase in net non-interest income, which reached RMB 54.151 billion. However, the bank’s net interest margin (NIM) experienced a slight contraction, decreasing by 3 basis points to 1.60%. Net interest income rose a more modest 1.62% to RMB 109.450 billion. Total assets grew by 2.45% to RMB 10,378.998 billion, while total loans and advances to customers increased by 2.33% to RMB 5,998.647 billion.

Corporate lending saw a notable increase, with the balance of corporate loans (excluding discounted bills) rising by 6.68% to RMB 3,265.772 billion. This growth was focused on sectors aligned with national strategic priorities like manufacturing, rental and business services, and information technology. Conversely, personal loans and credit card loans saw decreases of 1.81% and 2.57% respectively. Total deposits from customers increased by 5.06% to RMB 6,355.597 billion, with both corporate and personal deposits contributing to the growth.

The bank reported net cash flows generated from operating activities of RMB 303.395 billion for the first nine months, a substantial 44.17% increase year-on-year, primarily attributed to increased interbank inflows. While the bank demonstrated solid overall performance, the slight contraction in net interest margin and declines in certain loan categories suggest a shifting landscape where non-interest income is becoming increasingly important. The reported profit growth, while positive, is tempered by the broader economic context and the challenges of navigating a ‘complex and severe external environment.
