BMW Q3 Deliveries Fall Amid China Slump, Europe Gains

BMW’s vehicle deliveries declined 6.3% in the third quarter to approximately 551,000 units, a result heavily influenced by a substantial 24.8% decrease in sales within the Chinese market. While the overall performance reflects a challenging global automotive landscape, the company demonstrated resilience in Europe and the United States, mitigating the impact of the Chinese downturn.

The decline in China, where the company delivered roughly 114,355 vehicles, underscores the broader struggles faced by German automakers in the region amid a shrinking market and intense price competition. However, BMW partially offset this weakness with growth in Europe, where deliveries rose 2.7% to around 235,600 units, fueled by increasing demand for electric vehicles, particularly the iX3 – the first model based on BMW’s new ‘Neue Klasse’ technology. The iX3’s success is noted as providing “strong growth impulses” for the company.

Sales in the United States also increased, rising 2.5% to over 106,700 vehicles. This growth is attributed to BMW's production facility in Spartanburg, which allows the company to avoid significant tariffs on a substantial portion of vehicles sold in the US market. The contrasting performance in China and the US raises the possibility of a shift in market rankings, with the US potentially overtaking China as BMW’s second-largest market.

Across its brands, BMW experienced varied results. While the core BMW brand saw a 6.8% decline in deliveries, Mini's sales decreased by 2.4%, and Rolls-Royce suffered an 18% drop. Despite these declines, BMW's overall performance surpassed that of other German automakers, which reported more significant downturns in Q3. Through the first nine months of the year, the BMW Group delivered 1.7 million vehicles, a decrease of 4.9% compared to the same period last year.

Looking ahead, the company emphasizes the strong order backlog for its electric vehicles, signaling continued investment in electrification as a key strategy. With 110,257 battery electric vehicles delivered globally in Q3, BMW is positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for EVs, particularly in Europe, while navigating the headwinds in the Chinese market.
