Autotrader Group PLC Reports 5% EPS Growth Amidst Market Shifts

Autotrader Group PLC reported a 5% year-over-year increase in basic earnings per share to 18.10p for the first half of fiscal year 2027, despite a 1% decline in group revenue to £313.4 million. The results reflect resilience in the face of changing market dynamics and a strategic shift towards an AI-powered platform.

The revenue dip, driven by lower vehicle and accessory sales, was partially offset by growth in consumer services and manufacturer advertising. While retailer revenue decreased by 1%, the average revenue per retailer rose by 1% to £3,037, boosted by price increases and product offerings. Autotrader maintained strong audience engagement, with consumers spending 12 times more time on its platform than competitors, and accounting for over 75% of all minutes spent on UK automotive marketplaces. This dominance in buyer attention underscores the company's brand strength and market position.

Central to Autotrader’s strategy is the rollout of “Autotrader Intelligence,” a new AI platform intended to simplify the car buying and selling process. The company is investing heavily in this initiative, with 57 specialized AI models already in use and another 17 in development. Management expects this investment to be self-funded, maintaining consistent long-term margins. The company also returned £330 million to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks, purchasing 6.7% of its issued share capital.

Despite a broadly stable operating profit margin of 63%, the company is navigating a complex economic environment, including fluctuations in vehicle supply and affordability. Increased marketing spend, up 32% year-over-year, reflects efforts to maintain market share and drive growth. The company’s net debt increased to £335 million, increasing leverage to 0.8x, as it expanded its borrowing facilities to £600 million. The interim dividend has been increased by 11% to 4.2 pence per share.

Autotrader’s results demonstrate a strong core business coupled with a strategic pivot towards AI-driven innovation. While revenue growth remains modest, the company’s focus on enhancing its platform and returning capital to shareholders positions it for continued success in a rapidly evolving automotive market.
